Biochemist and nutritionist born in 1928 and educated at the California Institute of Technology (B.S. in 1949, Ph. D. in 1953). Saltman taught biochemistry at the University of Southern California from 1953 to 1967, when he accepted a position as Provost of UCSD's Revelle College.
